In the past, Owl and Pigeon were
friends. Almost every morning they sat on the same tree to talk and watch the
sunlight.
One morning, Owl boasted that
there were more owls than pigeons. “No, “said Pigeon. “That’s not true.”
There’s only one way to find out, “hooted Owl, puffed out its feathers. They
then agreed to count when the sun rises the following week in the Big Wood.
A week later, the owls arrived
first. They swooped down from every direction and perched on every tree in the
wood. Not long after that, thousands of pigeons swooped down in the Big Wood,
blacking out the sky.
As the pigeon landed, the owls
had to shuffle close together. Branches were broken when too many pigeons
landed at once. The owls couldn’t cover their eyes and their ears. The noise of
flapped wings and scratchy feet was deafening. Their eyes grew wider and wider,
they felt nervous. Being surrounded and squashed by many pigeons was a bit
scary. One by one the owl took off, fled skywards. Their staring eyes flatten
ever wider open by the wind rushing passing through.
No one did any counting. The
pigeons were shouting to each other, celebrating their victory. Since then,
owls have always travelled at night when pigeons are sleep.
