Past Continuous Tense (Past Progressive Tense)

1. Pengertian
Past Continuous Tense adalah kalimat atau ungkapan yang berfungsi untuk menyatakan kejadian yang sedang terjadi pada waktu lampau  dan bersamaan dengan peristiwa lain.

2. Rumus

(+) Subject + was/were + Verb1+ing + Complement
(-) Subject + was/were + not  + Verb1+ing + Complement
(?) Was/were + Subject + Verb1+ing + Complement ?

Keterangan :
Subject : I you, we, they, she, he, it

- Was digunakan untuk subject I, she, he, it
- Were digunakan untuk subject you, we, they

Example :
1. (+) She  was having breakfast yesterday morning
    (-) She was not having breakfast yesterday morning
    (?) Was she having breakfast yesterday morning?

2. (+) They were reading a book in the library
    (-) They were not reading a book in the library
    (?) Were they reading a book in the library?

3. Fungsi Past Continuous Tense

Past continuous tense dapat digunakan untuk menunjukkan beberapa peristiwa atau kejadian, yaitu sebagai berikut :

a. Menyatakan suatu peristiwa atau kejadian yang sedang terjadi pada waktu lampau

Contoh kalimat :
- He was cleaning the office yesterday
(Dia sedang membersihkan kantor kemaren)
- We were playing chess yesterday
(Kami sedang bermain catur kemaren)

b, Menyatakan suatu peristiwa/kejadian yang belum selesai ketika kejadian lain terjadi dimasa lampau
Contoh :
- She was sleeping when her mom came
(Dia sedang tidur ketika ibunya datang)

c. Menyatakan dua peristiwa atau kejadian yang terjadi pada waktu yang sama pada waktu lampau
Contoh kalimat :
- He was playing games while I was cooking
(Dia sedang bermain game sementara saya sedang memasak

d. Menyatakan suatu perisitwa atau kejadian yang terjadi secara bertahap
Contoh kalimat :
- The flower was blooming
(Bunga itu sedang mekar)

1. I was helping my mom when my friends came to my house yesterday
2. They were singing together when the teacher entered the classroom
3. We came to his house when he was playing card
4. My family were having dinner in the restaurant when the police caught the thief last night
5. Budi and Toni were watching TV when their mother called
